There are literally thousands—yes thousands—of fundraising “experts.”
They’re very few masters, however.
It’s these few that make magic happen—for themselves and the organizations they are a member of.
Why so few?
Because a “master” is a different animal from an “expert.”
Expertise is about doing. Mastery is about being.
When you’re a fundraising expert you have experience which has given you actionable knowledge of how to create and execute successful fundraising activities. Knowledge and mechanics applied to positive effect.
When you’re a master, you’ve on a different plain. A master isn’t focused on what to do but, rather, how to be.
A master understands the nuance of giving. What drives it. The inflection points. The paths to lasting excellence. Being a master isn’t about possessing a collection of skills. It’s about knowing how to think.
The Eight Principles is in the business of mentoring for mastery.
We start by filling in any gaps in your expertise then we focus on changing your mindset. The way you thinkabout fundraising and philanthropy. That’s where the magic takes place.
Jiu Jitsu is the king of martial arts. When you’ve mastered Jiu Jitsu, you not only can best jiu Jitsu experts, but also experts and masters in all other martial sports.
Very often expertise gets in the way on the path to mastery.
Expertise is the land of skill, “best practice”, certificates and professional association. However—best practice, by definition, can never outperform and outpace mastery.
Only mastery is timeless. Rising above any particular situation. Always defining and interpreting best practice, not following it.
We’re blocked from mastery when we become attached to doing something well.
This happens when the expert becomes satisfied with their credentials. Their certifications.
We like being “good.”
Then what?
Then we may be reluctant to let go and make space for a different approach—not just doing but knowing.
You can make a career out of being an expert. Nothing wrong with that.
If, on the other hand, you aspire to be a master. One that sets the path and agenda for all others, you’ll need to move up and become a master.
We can get you there.
